Born in Stromness, Orkney. His first published book was The Storm (Orkney Press, 1954) He wrote a regular column for the local weekly newspaper as well as poetry and prose from the 1940’s right up till his death and while never becoming a bestseller, he attracted a world-wide readership. Transcending the common and often mundane perception of Orkadian life and history, his writing was ethereal and timeless, filled with strong universal truths.

Works include Magnus, A Calendar of Love, Beside the Ocean of Time, Greenvoe, Hawkfall, The Island of the Women, A Time to Keep, Vinland, and Winter Tales.
His books can be picked up relatively cheaply and easily, and Kindle versions are available – beware, he seems to fall into the category where publishers think they can charge you as much, or more, for an ebook than for the real thing.
