John McGroarty was born and brought up in the south side of Glasgow. He now lives with his wife and son in Barcelona, where he teaches English. John has been writing since he was a boy and is the author of numerous short stories. THE TOWER is his first novel. It is set in the south side of Glasgow, amid the bleakness of crime, poverty, drugs and violence, THE TOWER transcends Tartan Noir. At its heart is a struggle between good and evil for the soul of a lost community. Honest, brutal and unflinching, you’ll see influences of writers as diverse as McIlvanney, Graham Greene and Dostoyevsky in this novel – and shades of ‘Shallow Grave’ into the bargain. Which makes it a definite unco book! It plays with Tartan Noir and goes beyond fashionable marketing labels.
Because the book is more, much more, than all of the labels. It transcends Tartan Noir. The murders, the murderers and those who pursue the murderers are but props in a finely drawn portrait of a community that has lost its way. Its inhabitants are also lost; lost, restless souls forever seeking to find a way out of the bleakness of poverty and drugs and violence. And within the bleakness a war rages, the eternal struggle between good and evil.
