John Muir April 21st 1838 – December 21th 1914 was also known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks"
He was born in Dunbar and the family moved to America in his youth.
He was an influential author, environmental philosopher, glaciologist and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States.
He wrote letters, essays and books describing his adventures in nature. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and many other wilderness areas.
He co-founded the conservation organisation and the Sierra Club.
