Very far away from the fairytale title, the novel is an observation on social class in Crockett’s near contemporary society. Galloway life is contrasted with London life with humour and careful observation and the Gallovidians come out clearly on top in the end.
A well constructed and interesting tale. Those who do not scorn the art of Galt will be glad that in his present book the author has returned to national types and Galloway of the Picts once more. There is a multiplicity of characters both in high and low life. An old fashioned yet vigorous story of poetic justice (that) will be appreciated by other than Scotch readers.
Far from being a light reworking of a classic fairytale, Crockett’s ‘Cinderella’ is an observation on social class in his contemporary society and as such fascinating to the modern reader for more than the romantic storyline it is wrapped in. The combination of romance and realism shows Crockett’s skill to great advantage.
